NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Incursion

Room 15 was lucky enough to have an incursion on ‘Indigenous Bush Tucker’ for NAIDOC week. We were taught all about how Indigenous Australians used to (and still do in some parts of Australia) use different native plants and animals for food and tools.
After the incursion we discussed some of the interesting things we learnt, they included:
  • There are six Noongar seasons called Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang
  • Aboriginals used different plants for different purposes, including how to prolong fires or create heat packs when the weather was cold.
  • How they stunned fish using a toxic seed so it was easier to spear and catch them.
  • Some of the unique names for plants, such as Oldman Saltbush.

It was so fascinating to learn about how the natural Australian environment provided food, shelter and many other things for Indigenous Australians.
